Good Morning. I hope everyone's summer is going well. I am excited to finally share our kitchen with you all today! We started with a very dark kitchen and I absolutely love how bright and fresh it looks now! Our home is only about 4 1/2 years old, so we already had really nice cabinets, stainless appliances and a great layout. Therefore, our changes were not major structural ones, but instead smaller cosmetic ones.
I love the look of an all white on white kitchen. We started a couple of years ago with painting the cabinets white which you can see more of here and here. And we finally completed the look about a month ago by adding the white subway tile backsplash. I was back and forth on whether to lay it horizontal or do a herringbone pattern, as well as whether to do a light or dark grout. Both looks I really liked, but finally decide to stick to a simple, classic look and go with the horizontal pattern and light grout. We did the backsplash ourselves, which was fairly easy once we got the hang of it. The harder part was actually removing the old tile and repairing the drywall before we could even get started. Before we installed the new backsplash, we also added under cabinet lighting which is wonderful! My husband did all the electrical work for those and I'm so excited that I can actually prepare food on our back counter tops now.
Lighting was the next change we made. You can see in the before picture below that we started with 3 smaller pendants over our island. For this makeover, I wanted to eliminate one of the small lights and instead switch to two large pendants. While hunting for lighting, I came across this round, wood chandelier and fell in love with it! So I decide, why not move the current breakfast table pendant (very similar here) to the island, buy one more to match, and replace the breakfast light with this pretty round one. Great plan, until the new island pendant arrived and was ever so slightly different from the old one. Ugh!! Same store, same name, but it had been changed a tiny bit. So much for saving a little $$$, as I had to order a second island pendant. But after all that I love how it all turned out and how they compliment each other!
The breakfast area also got a little refresh. In addition to the new light, I also purchased new chairs (love the gray finish on these) and decided to paint my pedestal table white. We used the same spray technique as we did on some of our previous painted furniture projects. And to give the table a protective finish we sealed it with 3 coats of polycrylic which will hopefully help it stand up to our daily use.
Would love to maybe change out the faucet one day and of course a lighter color granite would be so lovely, but it is not in our current budget. So, it will stay as is. For now :)

DeleteY'all did a wonderful job!! We've been toying with the idea of lightening up our kitchen, but we haven't pinned down anything yet. I'm hoping if/when we do it turns out half as good as this! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Iris! Go for it! You'll love it!

DeleteBecky it looks so good! Love white subway tile. That's what we put in our kitchen too! And those pendant lights are gorg!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tiffany! So happy with the new lights :)
DeleteWould you share the cost (or cost range) to paint your kitchen cabinets? Ours are dark, too. I've had 2 quotes in the $5,000 to $6,000 range. Ouch.
ReplyDeleteLet me check with my husband on cost...I can't remember :) But that seems high.
DeleteGreat, thank you.
DeleteIt looks amazing! I am in the process of renovating my kitchen and have white cabinets. I just ordered white subway tile as well. I never get tired of that clean, classic look! Beautiful job!

Thanks! I'm such a fan of simple, classic kitchens. Good luck with yours!
DeleteBecky, it looks so awesome! I don't remember ever seeing pics of your original kitchen - it has undergone such a fabulous transformation. Love the new light fixtures (can't believe that one didn't match, who'd have thought?!) and I hear you on being meh on your countertops. I have very similar countertops (I like yours better than mine though) and they are too nice to replace but definitely not my fave..
ReplyDeleteThanks Kris! It was soooo dark before. Light fixtures are my favorite change! And yes, the countertops are not my favorite, but too nice to replace and definitely the most expensive $$
DeleteAs I'm sitting here looking at these photos, they are tearing apart my kitchen. I've been on the fence about white cabinets with our white backsplash, but I'm pretty sure you just convinced me. Love the how bright your kitchen is!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sara! I say go for it! You'll love the bright, crisp feel! Good Luck!!
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love how light everything is. We are in the process of redoing our very old kitchen, it is such a long stressful process.
ReplyDeleteHoly amazingness!!!! It's absolutely stunning, Becky. I'm having a fit over that light above your table, among other things!
ReplyDeleteYou kitchen looks so great! That kitchen makeover sure made the place look livelier. For one, the new light fixtures really improved the ambience a lot, and then choosing stainless appliances enhanced it more. Thank you for sharing that, Becky!

Becky, this is so beautiful! White kitchens just make me happy. :) Pinning it to our Pretty Preppy Party board (and thanks for linking up!).
ReplyDeleteSimply beautiful! A job well done....
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks fresh and dynamic, as well! Maybe it's the play on lighting, maybe it's that spherical metallic lamp at the ceiling, but there's a sense of activeness that is happening around the kitchen. You should keep that up, then supplement it with top-flight cabinets and appliance. That should be good.

ReplyDeleteChoosing the right furniture is a necessary thing to upgrade your interior. The console table is more than a piece of living room furniture, it will be an ideal addition to your modern home interior. console-tables
